Google Assistant versus Amazon’s Alexa
Google Assistant versus Amazon’s Alexa

“Credit to the team at Amazon for creating a lot of excitement in this space,” said Google CEO Sundar Pichai. He made this comment during his Google I/O speech last week when introducing Google’s new voice-controlled home speaker, Google Home which offers a similar sounding description to Amazon’s Echo. Many interpreted this as a “thanks for getting it started, now we’ll take over,” kind of comment.

Compliance considerations for the medical Internet of Things
Compliance considerations for the medical Internet of Things

There are a number of regulations that attempt to ensure the privacy of sensitive patient data. This article explores security during patient data transmission, the regulations that govern it, and a recently announced solution that may enable more advanced medical Internet of Things applications that also comply with data security regulations.

Floored: NXP FTF 2016
Floored: NXP FTF 2016

This was my first time attending FTF, which incidentally was also the first FTF since the NXP/Freescale merger. To be honest, it was one of the most intriguing shows I've been to in a while, as the content, exhibitors, and attendees were all focused solely on the nuts and bolts of technology rather than proselytizing on market share, projections of IoT devices, and all the other market speak that makes conference goers wonder why they paid to get rhetoric shilled on them for days on end.

The Arizona Connected Vehicle Test Bed is a partnership between government (Maricopa County Department of Transportation), academia (University of Arizona College of Systems and Industrial Engineering), and industry (Savari Inc.) that has been in the works since 2009, and promises to cut travel time, fuel costs, pollution, and usher in a new standard of safety for vehicles and pedestrians alike.

IoT Roadshow, Denver: The middle ground of Internet of Things tech
IoT Roadshow, Denver: The middle ground of Internet of Things tech

I had the opportunity to listen and learn from design shops, value-added resellers, and services companies about how they’re leveraging the technology most of us read about in the mainstream press to help clients build solutions. Some of these included Colorado Engineering Inc. (CEI), Astek Corporation, Cardinal Peak, FreeWave Technologies, and Component Distributors, Inc. (CDI). If you’d like to journey to the middle, read on.

Eliminating tradeoffs of Java versus C in embedded, IoT

As the Internet of Things brings IT developers closer to the world of embedded application development than ever before, interest in using Java for resource constrained devices has piqued. However, as any good embedded developer knows, Java typically carries too much baggage for embedded MCUs and MPUs. Find out how virtual machines and acceleration engines can make Java suitable for embedded systems, as well as how a tool based on Java and C can make for extreme IoT portability, from Fred Rivard, CEO, CTO, and Founder of MicroEJ, and author of the JDT compiler.
